Women in the Workforce in India

A financial executive based in Boston, Warren Lammert leads Granite Point Capital. Previously, Warren Lammert received a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University.

Yale University economists Charity Troyer Moore and Rohini Pande co-authored a June 2021 study which showed that women in India who were given control over their wages were more likely to enter the workforce. The study focused on women whose wages were directly deposited into their banking accounts. Moreover, the women received training in how to use bank kiosks. The researchers, who surveyed 4,300 women, found that women who felt financially empowered were more likely to earn more in the private sector.

Women who had more access to banking resources were also more likely to have positive views about women working outside of the home. In addition, the study demonstrated that boosting women’s control over their finances increased their autonomy.

Tevard Biosciences Partners with Zogenix

In 2004, Warren Lammert founded Granite Point Capital, a Boston-based investment firm where he serves as the chief investment officer. Additionally, Warren Lammert is the chairman of Tevard Biosciences, a biotechnology startup that he co-founded.

Focused on developing innovative gene therapies to treat Dravet syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that commences in infancy, and other rare conditions, Tevard Biosciences is leading the field in transfer RNA (tRNA)-based gene therapies for people with Dravet syndrome. A small RNA molecule, tRNA helps ensure the appropriate amino acid is inserted during protein synthesis inside the cell.

In December 2020, Tevard announced a new partnership with Zogenix, a global biopharmaceutical company that, like Tevard, develops therapies for rare diseases. The companies will collaborate to pioneer new tRNA-based gene therapies to improve treatments for people with Dravet syndrome and other types of epilepsy that have a genetic cause. Zogenix, which is responsible for global commercialization, also brings to the partnership the ability to develop candidates for advanced pre-clinical and clinical studies.

Economist Studies Impact of Pandemic

An accomplished financial executive and philanthropist, Warren Lammert is the founder and chief investment officer at Granite Point Capital, a Boston investment firm. Previously, Warren Lammert graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of arts in economics.

A recent study co-authored by Yale economics professor Fabrizio Zilibotti found that school closures related to the pandemic have led to greater educational inequality by hindering the progress of students from underserved communities. On the other hand, there was no detrimental impact on students from more affluent areas.

The researchers used a quantitative model to examine the effects of extended school closures on high school students. As a result, they found that students living in the poorest 20 percent of neighborhoods experienced the worst impact of school closures. The model forecast that a year of school closures would lead ninth graders in need to experience a 25 percent decline in their earnings potential following the completion of their education.
